How it works

Monthly amount = (goal − already saved) ÷ months at a 0% rate, rounded up to the next cent. With a rate, each month your balance grows by (1 + APY)1/12 and then the deposit is added; the calculator finds the smallest deposit that reaches the goal in time.

Worked example

Goal $10,000, already saved $1,000, target in 24 months, 0% rate: ($10,000 − $1,000) ÷ 24 = $375.00 a month, with $9,000 deposited in total.

Frequently asked questions

How is the monthly amount worked out?

With no interest it is (goal − already saved) ÷ months, rounded up to the next cent. If you enter a savings rate, the calculator finds the smallest monthly deposit that still reaches the goal once interest is counted.

How many months does it use?

Whole months from today to your target date. The first deposit is one month from today and deposits happen at the end of each month.

What if I cannot afford that amount?

Try a later date or a smaller goal. For a plan that checks the amount against your income and expenses, use the dated savings plan.

Should I enter a savings rate?

Only if your money will sit in an account that pays interest, and then use its APY. Leaving it at 0% is the cautious choice, since it counts deposits only.

Is this the same as the savings plan tool?

No. This page answers one question quickly: how much per month for one goal. The savings plan also looks at your pay and expenses, and shows milestone dates and a month-by-month schedule.
