Rocket Money vs Monarch
These two apps start from different problems. Rocket Money’s homepage highlights finding and tracking subscriptions and negotiating bills, with budgeting as part of the package. Monarch’s pages emphasise connecting all your accounts for budgets, goals and net worth. Here is how their own pages compare.
How we chose these apps
This page covers apps that we have, or have applied for, affiliate relationships with: Monarch Money, Rocket Money. That is the only reason these apps are here. It is not a ranking of every budgeting app on the market, and apps without an affiliate program are not covered, so a good option may be missing. We do not rate, score or rank the apps. Facts come from each app’s official pages, with the date we checked; where we could not read a page we say so. See our disclosure.

Visit Rocket Money Visit Monarch Money
Rocket Money’s Premium price comes from an official guide dated January 19, 2026, and that page, the FAQ and the help center do not fully agree on some free-plan limits, so we show only the points they agree on. Monarch’s pricing page does not name which tier its $14.99 and $99.99 prices apply to; it separately announced Monarch Plus at $199 a year.
What the free plan covers
Rocket Money’s help center says its free plan includes core tools like subscription tracking, budgeting and bill reminders, while Premium adds things like net worth tracking, real-time syncing, the desktop experience and in-app subscription cancellation. Monarch’s trial runs 7 days, after which a paid plan is needed.
Who each may suit
Rocket Money
May suit you if
- You mainly want to find, track and cancel subscriptions

May not suit you if
- You want every feature without paying
- You want detailed budgeting on the free plan
Limitations
- Hands-off subscription cancellation, net worth tracking, real-time sync and the desktop experience are not available on the free plan. source
- Bill negotiation carries a one-time fee of 35–60% of your first year’s savings. source
- Premium prices vary on a sliding scale and can differ across platforms and over time. source
Monarch Money
May suit you if
- You want accounts, budgets, goals and net worth in one automatic view
- You and a partner want a shared view of money
May not suit you if
- You want a permanently free plan
- You want to keep some accounts private from a household member
Limitations
- The pricing page lists only paid monthly and yearly subscriptions after the 7-day trial; we did not find a permanent free plan. source
- Monarch recommends signing up on the web rather than through the Apple or Google app stores, for easier subscription management. source
- In a shared household, both people have full visibility into all accounts and transactions. source
Doing the same job for free
- Listing your subscriptions and what they cost is a ten-minute job: put them in the subscriptions line of the budget planner.
- Net worth: the free net worth calculator adds up assets and debts in your browser.
- Goals: set a dated target in the savings plan.
Frequently asked questions
Which one has a free plan?
Rocket Money offers a free plan and a paid Premium plan. The Monarch pricing page we read lists only paid monthly and yearly subscriptions after a 7-day trial; we did not find a permanent free plan.
What is the main difference?
Rocket Money’s own pages emphasise finding subscriptions, cancellation and bill negotiation, with budgeting included. Monarch’s pages emphasise syncing accounts for budgets, goals and net worth, with household sharing.
Do I pay for Rocket Money’s bill negotiation?
Its help center says it charges a one-time fee of 35–60% of your first year’s savings, and you pay only if savings are achieved. Check the current terms before you use it.
Can a partner use either?
Both describe sharing. See budgeting apps for couples for what each one’s docs confirm.
